Virtuous

23 Sep

She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness.” Proverbs 31:26 (KJV)

Proverbs talks about a virtuous woman that most of us can only wonder about. In the hustle and bustle of the modern day life, most of us are tickled to get home from work, put dinner on the table, help with the kid’s homework, draw their baths and find 5 minutes to breathe before “hitting the sack.” I feel greatly accomplished if I can get an hour of prayer, Bible study and devotionals in before the family is up in the morning. How did life get this way?

The husband of the virtuous woman trusts her, and because of it he increases in his livelihood – but today the divorce rate (inside and outside of the church) is 50% in America in 2011, and many couples never marry at all, they just enjoy the “pleasure” without the commitment. Trust becomes scarce.

The virtuous woman works with her hands and brings food from “afar” – today, working with your hands ruins a $40 fingernail job and no one wants to travel more than a mile to go to the well-stocked grocery store.

The virtuous woman gets up while it is still dark and provides food for her family and servants – today, it’s a waffle or Pop Tart tossed in the toaster and everyone is still eating as they run out the door to school, appointments and work.

The virtuous woman buys land and plants vineyards – today, we’re trying desperately to keep our homes out of foreclosure. Inner city home lots are very small and growing a small garden is a true challenge with limited time and the cost of water. The time and financial economics doesn’t encourage the consideration, it’s cheaper and easier to pick up processed canned veggies.

The virtuous woman girds herself with strength – today, we are bombarded with ads about workout videos, the newest greatest exercise equipment, and classes that we attend a few times and then drop out of for lack of time and/or ambition.

The virtuous woman makes good quality products and works late into the night to finish them – today, we spend our days at a job in a business owned by someone else, hoping for a reduction in hours and an increase in pay. It is just an end to a need, no feeling of belonging, no pride in ownership, and little hope of success.

The virtuous woman makes sure her family is well clothed, and in “fine” clothing – today, there are charities and websites addressing the needs of the homeless and impoverished, begging for warm clothing and blankets because jobs are so scarce. People are living in their cars, in parks, in tents, or if they’re lucky, with relatives; trying to survive.

The virtuous woman has many other qualities that I do see clearly in the Church today, and even stronger as this economy rages. I see diligence in prayer, for themselves and for those in the community around them. I see honor in lending a hand to another, knowing that “but by the Grace of God go I.” I see developing and increasing wisdom through their relationship with Jesus. I see extended kindness to the hurting and lost through the leading of the Holy Spirit.

Although the times have drastically changed between the writing about the Virtuous Woman and now, we still have the choice of how we will live our lives and present ourselves to those around us. We can take on the armor of God, or find continued excuses to give into the way of the world. We can exhibit the fruit of the Spirit, or we can block out the needs of the helpless and dying; caring for “our 4 and no more.” We can be the hands and feet of Jesus – or we can prepare ourselves for the words “I never knew you: depart from me . . .” (Matt 7:23).

Lord, help me to strive to be virtuous, never forgetting that EVERYONE around me is your child, filled with dimmed hopes and abandoned dreams. Let me be your hands and feet.

A Pebble in My Shoe

29 Oct

Pebble & Shoe

“Who can say, I have made my heart clean, I am pure from my sin?“ Proverbs 20:9

—–

There’s a pebble in my shoe,

One of those small odd shaped ones,

That often fall securely to the side,

Only rubbing a little.

 —–

Not a big pebble,

Yet not too small.

 —–

I know it’s there,

I know it doesn’t belong,

But it isn’t so large that I need to stop,

To empty it out.

In fact, if I toss my foot just so,

I hardly know it’s there.

 —–

Once in a while,

It jumps right out of it’s crease,

And settles beneath my heel,

Zapping me back to the realization,

That it really doesn’t belong.

—–

Then I shake my foot again,

And send it off,

To hide in a crease.

—–

I could shake it out,

But I’ve grown accustomed to its presence,

It’s sort of a game,

How far can I walk without getting zapped.

And it’s like having a deep secret,

That no one else knows.

—–

Sometimes I talk to it,

It’s like an old friend,

Then it bruises a toe,

And becomes an agitation.

 —–

Soon I’ll toss it out,

I can do it any time I want.

I think.

—–

It won’t matter if I toss it out,

Or if it stays,

It doesn’t affect me that much,

At least not than anyone else would notice.

Well, except for those who see me limp,

Or occasionally jump.

But otherwise, no one can tell.

 —–

I have a pebble in my shoe,

I call it sin.

WOMAN OF GRACE

9 Sep

 woman in prayer

“Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised.”  Proverbs 31:30 KJV

—-

Born of sacrifice,

Birthed in grace,

Bone of man’s bone,

Blood of man’s blood.

—-

Chosen to serve,

Cleaving to the covenant,

The promise of Adam,

The promise of Abraham.

—-

Grace to bring forth,

The children of promise,

Destined to call,

Destined to serve.

—-

Grace to pray truth,

Into the nation,

Grace to endure,

Intercession by day,

Intercession by night.

—-

Unwaivering love,

Unmerited favor,

To see past the pain,

Of sin’s temporal hand,

To the promise of life,

This side of the cross.

—-

Faith in the truth,

Abounding with love,

To believe in the birth,

To believe in the death,

Of life and of Sin,

Of spirit, of soul.

—-

Grace to bloom forth,

As the rose in the desert,

With fragrance and velvet,

From the thorns,

Rigid arms.

—-

Rising to God,

In manifest witness,

Of grace and of mercy,

In truth from above.

TRUST

Hands and World

By Linda J. Humes

“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” Proverbs 3:5 – 6 KJV

Trust. An interesting concept. What is trust? Trust is traveling down a highway at 65 MPH with another vehicle bearing down on you from the opposite direction at the same speed – knowing that they won’t cross the double yellow line that separates you. Trust is running 75 MPH up a mountain grade, zipping past the big rigs struggling at 30 MPH to make the grade and knowing they aren’t going to cross that dotted white line and pull in front of you.

Every day we stand on that trust, even though we’ve seen the evidence of betrayed trust along the way – figure eight skid-marks, pieces of vehicles and flares along the road, even one retaining wall in Phoenix which had been scrapped black from an impact and someone had painted a red cross in the center. Momentary diversions. If we dwell on the betrayed trust we wouldn’t be able to function in transportation – fear would overwhelm us and we would remain paralyzed. We MUST remain in trust.

If I can trust completely in strangers in my everyday travels – why do I struggle in trusting that God will honor His word?

Recently our family had gone through critical medical and financial crisis. I knew in my heart that God could provide for our needs – for healing – for the medical expenses – for our food and shelter. But in my mind it was too big. How could I help make it happen – ever been there??

I looked around for extra work, there wasn’t any. I tried putting things out in front of our home to sell – a car hit the items and they were ruined. We called everywhere we could think of for assistance – we didn’t qualify. Every door closed around us – God wanted us to know that He was in control. He WAS! Healing came. Food boxes and grocery gift cards came. Every bill has been paid to date. Praise God! I don’t know how He did it; I only know that He did. I trust that he will continue until this crisis has ended.

Trust. Interesting concept. What is it? It’s knowing that if I walk humbly and faithfully in His ways, He will be there to meet my needs. It’s knowing that no matter how much I try, I can’t. It’s knowing that my Heavenly Father loves me more than I could ever fathom and wants His perfect plan for my life. It’s knowing that all I have to do is call His Name and He will be there beside me.

In that I trust.

Watching

horses

“Blessed is the man that heareth me, watching daily at my gates, waiting at the posts of my doors.” Proverbs 8:34 (KJV)

One of the wonderful blessings of living in Northern Arizona is the wide open land I travel through every day to work. I get to cherish God’s handiwork of fields, hills, clouds, sunrises, sunsets and the animals that roam the area.

At one point along my route there is a herd of about 20 horses. If I pass them by 7:50am they are all in a line against the fence, all facing northeast, toward the highway headed into Holbrook; every head is lifted, ear perked, intent, expectant, waiting. If I pass them closer to 8:00am they are back in the field, in a circle, all heads together down at the ground, eating the hay and oats delivered to them. No fussing, no fighting, no pushing; savoring their meal in peace, knowing each will receive enough. The rest of the day they graze the fields, each going their own different way.

Lord, I want to be like that. I want to wake up every morning and intently, expectantly seek you. I want to wait patiently until I hear you, see you, feel you, without distraction. And when you have met me, I want to eat of Your word, delight in Your presence, find peace in my relationship with You, before I step out into my busy day. I want to.

Why do I allow necessities to get into the way? I get up earlier and necessities swell. I look for quiet, but I find noise. I pray for a simpler time. Lord, I’m tired.

Pull me up Lord, into Your presence, as I do my chores, dress for the day and drive the road to work. Strengthen our relationship with every moment we share. Let me rest in You between every phone call and pen stroke. Let me be ever aware of Your unceasing love, drawing me on through the difficulties of the day. Keep me mindful of those around that I need to share your peace and joy with, even when the pressures of the moment try to push them from my day. I need you and the joy and confidence you put into my life. Help me to share it Lord, with my every word and action.
